What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Asian healing system with a history going back thousands of years. It originated in China, and later branched off into different styles in Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries. Acupuncture is a holistic, natural method of healing through restoring the body’s original harmony and balance. This healing art is based on maintaining the free flow of the body’s energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”) to stop pain, restore health, and also to prevent illness. A typical treatment may consist of the insertion of acupuncture needles, as well as moxibustion (the application of heat to stimulate acupuncture points), an herbal medicine prescription, and sometimes acupressure massage techniques.

Is it painful?

No, the insertion of acupuncture needles is often painless, and typically only a moderate sensation is felt. The needles used for acupuncture are extremely fine compared to the typical needle used for a hypodermic injection.
